Willie Lee Humes, Sr., the husband of Melinda LeGrant Humes was born June 22, 1955, in Sumter, South Carolina. He was the seventh of ten children born to the late James R. Humes, Sr. and Linnie Doiley Humes. Willie was reared in the Goodwill Community of Sumter County. He received his formal education in the public schools of the former Sumter School District Two, graduating in the Mayewood High School Class of 1976. Additionally, Willie, who was brought up in a Christian home, was nurtured as a child in the faith at Goodwill Presbyterian Church. As an adult, he served as a Trustee and member of the Men's Council. Upon graduating from Mayewood, Willie enlisted in the United States Army where he served one tour of duty. He returned home and worked in several local industries including Exide, Madison Industries, Gold Kist, Santee Print Works and Liberty Seafood. Willie loved fishing, gardening, cooking and the spoils of his labor in these areas will be missed by family, neighbors and friends, whom he shared without reservation. He loved people and enjoyed making others feel special. In addition to his parents, James R. Humes, Sr. and Linnie Doiley Humes, Willie was preceded in death by his daughter, Norhonda Lastasha Davis; sister, Emma Humes Jones; brother, James Humes Jr.; maternal grandparents, James and Emma Doiley; paternal grandparents, James Ricks and Joe Humes Sr.; nephews, Alexander Williams and Larry Humes; and niece, Kathy Dunham Benjamin. Willie Lee Humes, Sr. departed this life on Friday, December 13, 2024, in Pinewood, South Carolina. Willie leaves behind to cherish fond memories, his wife, Melinda Humes; children, Maurice Humes of Atlanta, Georgia and Willie L. Humes, Jr. of Sumter, SC; stepchildren, Robert (Katrina) Moses Jr., Andre Moses, Angela Moses, all of Sumter, SC, and Jeremy Moses of Columbia, SC; three sisters, Rosa Dunham of Sumter, SC, Flora (Robert) Brown of Gable, SC and Gale (Leroy) Copeland of Sumter, SC; four brothers, Leroy (Rev. Vermell) Humes and Freeman Humes, both of Sumter, SC, Henry (Ingrid) Humes of Hilton Head, SC, and Alfred (Sandra) Humes of Sumter, SC; sisters-in-law, Barbara (Randy) Washington, Carolyn Cooper, Janice Cooper, all of Sumter, SC; and Jennie (Alfred) Washington of Louisville, KY; brothers-in-law, John W. Cooper of Sumter, SC and Michael (Gayle) Cooper of Charleston, SC; aunt, Linda (Marvin) Humes-Neal, Georgetown, SC; one grandchild, thirteen step-grandchildren, five great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and dear friends.
