Obituary

A Time to Live Mrs. Vermelle Duncan Whittleton was born on October 15, 1949, to the late Mr. Henry Duncan, Jr. and Mrs. Hattie Mae Duncan. She was one of five children and the oldest of all the children.  A Time to Learn Mrs. Whittleton attended public schools and then graduated from Ebenezer High School in 1968.  A Time to Work Mrs. Whittleton dedicated over 30 years of service to Cooper Tools as a machine operator. After retiring, she dedicated a few years to doing home health for several clients while attending computer classes. A Time to Love Mrs. Whittleton was married to the late Mr. Jimmy Holiday, her oldest daughter, Wanda Hunter Haltek's father. Later after his death, she was united in marriage to the late Mr. Paul Whittleton, whom she loved deeply for 27 years until his passing March 17, 2018. Mrs. Whittleton was a very caring, loving, and giving Woman of God. A Time for God As a young adult, Mrs. Whittleton dedicated her life to Christ. She was a faithful member of Orangehill A.M.E. where she served on the Usher board, Pulpit Aide, Missionary board and YPD as President for several years. Mrs. Whittleton was also a faithful member of The United Order of Tent, Sumter District Elizabeth Tent No.57. Mrs. Whittleton was baptized in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ under the ministry of Bishop David Solomon Johnson of The Progressive Church of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ of the Apostolic in Lugoff, South Carolina.  A Time to Transition Mrs. Vermelle Whittleton was preceded in death by her parents, Henry Duncan, Jr. and Hattie Mae Duncan; husband, Paul Whittleton; daughter, Wanda Hunter Haltek; sister, Rebecca Duncan and two brothers, Moses Butler and Henry Duncan III.  After successfully completing her destiny in this earthly life, Mrs. Vermelle Whittleton transitioned into the presence of the Lord on Friday, March 14, 2025, at Prisma Richland Heart Hospital in Columbia, South Carolina. Mrs. Vermelle Whittleton is survived by her loving daughter, Stacey (Matthew) McCutcheon of Hopkins, South Carolina; two sons by marriage, Sam (Deborah) Whittleton of Maryland and Neal Whittleton of Florida; grandchildren, Alexis Ritter of Sumter, South Carolina, Trevon Stewart, Nehemiah Stewart, Speerit Toney, both of Hopkins, South Carolina; Joshua Hunter of Illinois; grandchildren by marriage, Tamara Whittleton, Alaysia Whittleton, Nealeha Whittleton, Daniella Whittleton, Kayla Green and Nicoli Whittleton; three sisters, Helen Duncan of Wedgefield, South Carolina, Rovenia (Kelvin) King of Alabama, and Louvenia Duncan of Sumter, South Carolina; son-in-law, James Haltek; two brothers-in-law, William (Daisy) Whittleton and John (Nell) Jackson of Sumter, South Carolina; and sister-in-law, Ruth Ellen Davis of Columbia, South Carolina; great-grandchildren, Jax Godbolt of Sumter, South Carolina and Amaya Blair, of Maryland; niece and goddaughter, Teagan Green of Charlotte, North Carolina; nephew, TJ Green of Sumter, South Carolina; godson, Jerome (LJ) Ramsey of Columbus, Georgia; special best friend, Mrs. Laura Brock; host of aunts, nieces and nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends who are deeply saddened by her passing.
