Sister Verlie Ann Brisbon Rufus was born February 21, 1951, in Bishopville, Lee County, South Carolina to the late Miller and Rosa Lee Pearson Brisbon. Sister Verlie was educated in the public schools of Lee County and was a member of the graduating class of 1969 of Dennis High School in Bishopville, South Carolina. Sister Verlie, affectionately called "Big Ann", was a good cook and loved taking care of her children. Prior to her health declining, "Big Ann" was known to prepare and give out food in her neighborhood. She was a loving and caring housekeeper and dedicated her time to raising her family. One thing was certain, and it was that she loved her children. She was kindhearted and was known for giving to people. Sister Verlie was married to a loving husband, Mr. John Henry Rufus, Sr. Sister Verlie was baptized in the name of Jesus Christ and was a member of the Church in the Lord Jesus Christ of the Apostles' Doctrine, Inc. in Hartsville, South Carolina. Sister Verlie was preceded in death by her husband, John Henry Rufus, Sr.; her son, John Henry Rufus, Jr.; one granddaughter, Latavia Rufus; her parents, Miller and Rosa Lee Pearson Brisbon; two sisters, Thomasina Brisbon and Bertha Brisbon; and three brothers, Johnny Brisbon, Calvin Brisbon and Ollie Brisbon. Sister Verlie departed this life on Monday, March 25, 2024 at Prisma Health Heart Hospital in Columbia, South Carolina. Sister Verlie leaves to cherish her memories, her children, Ollie (Precious) Rufus of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Addrienne (David) Robinson of Dalzell, South Carolina, Leon (Unwanta) Rufus, Margaret Michael, Alicia Rufus, LaQuanda Rufus, Samantha (Curtis) Durant all of Bishopville, South Carolina, Natasha (Christopher) Joe of Dazell, South Carolina and Lucinda (Michael) Major of Sumter, South Carolina; forty grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; two adopted sisters, Mazie Shaw of Woodrow, South Carolina and Annielou Joe of Bishopville, South Carolina; one adopted brother, Ernest Johnson of Bishopville, South Carolina and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends too include a large church family. Sister Verlie will be lovingly remembered in the hearts of those whom loved her.
