Obituary

Thomas Phillip Spencer was born March 25, 1958, in Rembert, South Carolina to the late Betty Spencer and the late Thomas Hunter.  Thomas was the only child of his mother Betty, and she affectionately called him Phillip, his middle name. Thomas, although the only child, didn't grow up alone because he was blessed to be raised by not just his mother, but grandmother, great aunts, great uncles, aunties and several first cousins as his siblings. Thomas was raised in a Christian environment and was taught to trust and believe in God. In his early life he attended Good Hope United Methodist Church in Rembert, SC, and regularly attended Sunday School and church services. Thomas excelled in school from elementary through high school.  He was smart, intelligent, and an overall exceptional student.  Upon graduation from Hillcrest High School, he enlisted in the United States Army.  He proudly served his country.  One of his favorite places during his tour of duty was Germany and he spoke German fluently. Thomas was honorably discharged from the military and returned to his roots in Rembert.  Upon his return, he worked several jobs as a contractor.  He mastered whatever he set his mind to do. Thomas later moved to the Washington, DC/Maryland area with his brother and sister-in-law.  Once again he became skillfully employed on a military base and worked there for several years. In 2022, he returned home once again to enjoy life, family and travel at his leisure.  He grew to love fishing and hunting, with his brothers, Tony and Jackie. Several loved ones preceded Thomas on his journey through life.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandparents, Almeta Spencer, Adam and Marie Hunter; aunts, Laura Spencer Bell, Bertha Spencer, Edna Spencer Jasper, Mary Hinton and Tressie Spencer; and uncles, Charlie Hunter and Booker T. Spencer. Thomas departed this life on Thursday, August 21, 2025, in Columbia, South Carolina. Thomas leaves to cherish his memories, six brothers, Tony (Tia) Williams, Jackie (Carolyn) Williams, Willie (Lorine) Jasper, Christopher (Willie Mae) Jasper, Melvin Jasper, Wodell Jasper and Ricky Starks; six sisters, Hazel Spencer (Gallman) Wicker, Irene Spencer (William) Bennett, Yvonne Weston, Barbara (Larry) Furman, Wendy Starks Maple and Patricia Young; three aunts, Louise Hanley, Percalee (Dr. Robert) Morris and Shirley Spencer Starks; his special family that he claim to be his own, Barbara, G. J., Tori and Brittany; best friends since childhood, Kenny Littles and Willie Peay; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
