Obituary

Mr. Sylvester Covington, affectionally known as "Bubba" was born in Evergreen, Alabama on August 31, 1944. He was the son of the late I. C. and Nina Brye Covington. Sylvester attended the public schools of Conecuh County, Alabama and graduated from Conecuh High School in 1962. He continued his education at Central Carolina in Sumter, SC and received certification for Small Engine Repairs. Sylvester served in the US Army from 1967-1969. After serving his country he was employed as a truck driver for several years in New York. He later moved back to Sumter, South Carolina where he was later employed at Dorn Veteran Hospital in Columbia, South Carolina until his retirement in 2009. After his retirement from the Veterans Hospital, he started working for Sumter School District as a school bus driver until 2019. Sylvester became a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church at an early age in Evergreen, Alabama. He attended church in New York and when he moved to Sumter, South Carolina in 1977, he became a member of Mt. Pisgah Missionary Baptist Church in Rembert, South Carolina. He served in different capacities, to include, President of the Male Chorus, Choir Member, and Deacon of the Church. His passion was singing and gardening. Fifty-four years ago, Sylvester was joined in holy wedlock to the love of his life, Mary Alice White, and to this union they were blessed with three sons. He reared his sons to put God first in everything they desired to do and if they did so, God would work it out for their good. He also taught them the importance of prayer. In addition to his parents, Sylvester was preceded in death by two sisters, Lillie Taliaferro, Mary Covington; father-in-law, Johnny White and mother-in-law, Clara White. "I will pay my vows unto the Lord now in the presence of His people, precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His Saints, O Lord, truly thy servant; I am thy servant and the son of Thine handmaid; Thou hast my bonds." (Psalm 116:14-16) Sylvester accepted the call from God and departed this life for his heavenly home on Monday, February 24, 2025, at Prisma Tuomey Hospital in Sumter, South Carolina. His legacy and love will continue through his loving and devoted wife, Mary Alice Covington, of the home, three sons, Michael D. (Cynthia) Covington of Sumter, South Carolina, Marlon J. Covington and Martin L. Covington of Columbia, South Carolina; six grandchildren, Tyrell Copeland, Michael Covington, Jr., Johnathan Covington, Zy'Asia Covington, Laterer Covington, and Damarion Covington; four great grandchildren; three brothers, Charlie Covington of Pensacola, Florida, Calvin (Patricia) Covington of Mobile Alabama, Jake Covington of Nevada; three sisters, Inez Culliver of Sacramento, California, Christine Covington of Mobile, Alabama and Mary Likely of Omaha, Nebraska; one sister-in-law, Clara Mae Powell of Chattanooga, Tennessee; and a host of other relatives and dear friends.
