Porteaner Smith Bowens Nance was born May 24, 1954, in Charleston, South Carolina to the late Richard and Annie Brown Smith. Porteaner was educated in Charleston, South Carolina. After finishing high school, she furthered her education at Rice College for Business and obtained her associate degree. Porteaner, affectionately known as Tina, was full of life, love and resilience. She never met a stranger that didn't become a friend. She touched the lives of all she knew and loved. Porteaner was known for her home cooked meals, baking cakes and pies. Porteaner accepted Jesus as her Savior and was a member of Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, where she sang in the choir and worked with the church food bank. Porteaner was previously married to Essau Bowens and to that union two children were born, Rachael P. Bowens and Essau Bowens, Jr. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Essau Bowens, Jr.; three siblings, Maple Porterfield, Rachel Herrington and Herman Smith; and a niece, Wanda Marion. Porteaner departed this life on Sunday, January 12, 2025, in Pinewood, South Carolina. Porteaner leaves to cherish her memory, a daughter, Rachael P. (Reggie) Bowens; two brothers, Barreck "Rico" Smith of Charleston, South Carolina and James (Carol) Smith of Greenville, North Carolina; aunt, Margaret (Buster) Cooper; brother-in-law, Hosey Porterfield; sister-in-law, Brenda Smith; nieces, Julanda Bennett, Shelia McCrea-Alston, Ebony Singleton, Shelby Miller, and Shaniqua Singleton; nephews, Richard Bennett, Ervin Moore, Evrith Smith, Jr., Eric McCrea, Kysii Smith, and Terez Smith; an adopted sister, Ella Mae Tindal; special friend, Michelle Boss; and a host of other relatives and dear friends.
