Obituary

Joseph Nathaniel Pinkney was born April 14, 1953 in Sumter, South Carolina to the late Calvin and Gertie Mae Pinkney.  Joseph attended the public schools of Sumter, South Carolina and graduated from Sumter High School in 1971. He got his Welding Certification from Midlands Technical College in Columbia, South Carolina.. Joseph worked for SCE&G Gas Company for many years before retiring. Joseph was a handyman and he loved helping others. He used his skills as a mechanic, carpenter, and plumber to help others when needed. Joseph attended Mt. Zion Baptist Church at an early age with his parents. Later, he attended Salem Baptist Church and Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church. Joseph was preceded in death by one son, Nakia Donte Pyatt; one grandson, Rakeem Gerard McDonald Jr;  four sisters, Roselle McDaniel, Eva Childrey, Hattie Epps, and Eleanor Smith; and  five brothers, Moses Pinkney, James Pinkney, John Calvin Pinkney, Sammie Pinkney, and Jerome Pinkney. Joseph Pinkney departed this life on June 23, 2025. Joseph's love and fond memories will be cherished by his three daughters, Chaveilla McDonald of Charleston, South Carolina, Sheneal Gadson and Wendy (Mitch) Millerson of Sumter, South Carolina; two sons, Rakeem McDonald and Joseph Nathaniel McDonald, both of Sumter, South Carolina;. thirteen grandchildren; one great granddaughter; sister, Mildred (James) Pinkney Rogers of Darby, Pennsylvania; two brothers, Leon Pinkney of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Leroy (Mary) Pinkney of Sumter, South Carolina; very close friend, Beatrice Gadson; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and dear friends.
