Obituary John William Scarborough aka "Newt" was born March 17, 1938 in St. Charles, SC to the late Maggie Scarborough Copeland and George Gregg, Sr. and the stepson of the late Harry Copeland, Sr.John accepted Christ into his life at an early age.John was educated in the public schools of Lee County, SC. He started his work career at the age of nineteen (19) at a local filling station. He later advanced his career with the City of Sumter as a groundskeeper and maintenance worker. When he started this position in 1964 with the City of Sumter, he was earning a wage of 0.81 cents per hour and retired from the City of Sumter in 1994.He later worked for the Odell Rogers Dealership after retirement until his health declined in 2004.John was a kind and loving man. He loved to sit on the porch with his family, listening to his old music and having fun. He loved gardening, doing yard work and keeping his cars clean.In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his brother, George Gregg, Jr. and his great grandson, Jason Cornell.John departed this life on Monday, May 14, 2018 in Sumter, SCJohn leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of fifty (50) years, Marie Copeland Scarborough; six children, John (Marie) Scarborough, Jr. of Sumter, SC, Erline (Henry) Davis of Sumter, SC, Odell Scarborough of Sumter, SC, Sonya (Ruben) Haynes of Sumter, SC, Wayne (Carla) Scarborough of Sumter, SC, Carolyn (Ryan) Yates of Sumter, SC; twelve grandchildren and seven of which he raised in his home, Jamie (Sharelle) Scarborough, Latasha (Quinten) Rouse, RaQuan Woods, Nykwon Woods, Dashwan Howard, Destiny Howard and Kristen Howard; nine great grand children; sister, Dora (James) Parrott of Sumter, SC; two sisters-in-law, Anna Copeland of Sumter, SC and Bertha Mabry (Olen) of Baltimore, MD; and a host of other relatives and friends.
