Herbert Lee Lewis, Sr. was born February 17, 1960, in Sumter, South Carolina to the late James and Sarah Mae Ramsey Lewis. Today we gather to honor the life of Herbert Lewis Sr, a husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, friend, and so much more. His story can't be captured in a single word or title, because he wore many hats, and he wore them all with pride. As a husband, Herbert was steady and loving, the kind of partner who built a life on trust and hard work. As a father and grandfather, he was hands-on—showing his family not just how to live, but how to live with heart. He taught by example, whether it was fixing something with his tools, casting a line into the water, or simply lending a helping hand when needed. Herbert was a contractor by trade, but anyone who knew him would say his real work was serving others. If something broke, he fixed it. If someone was in trouble, he showed up. He was a master of all trades—not just with his hands, but with people. He had a way of connecting with anyone, from neighbors to strangers, and making them feel like they mattered. Herbert loved outdoors fishing, hunting, and finding peace in nature. Those quiet mornings on the lake or in the woods were more than hobbies for him. They were his way of recharging, of appreciating God's creation, and of sharing time with those he loved. At church, Herbert was a faithful member, a man whose faith showed in his actions more than his words. He believed in living by example—helping, serving, and giving more than he ever asked for in return. And to friends and family, Herbert was the kind of person you could count on—whether you needed advice, a laugh, or someone to roll up their sleeves and help you get through a tough job. In addition to his parents, Herbert was preceded in death by his son, Orin Lewis. Herbert departed this life on Wednesday, September 4, 2025, in Sumter, South Carolina. Herbert leaves to cherish his memories, his wife, Shirley Mae Lewis; two children, Herbert Lewis Jr. and Shirleeia Lewis; grandchild, Malik Patton Lewis; two sisters, Shiffer (James) Fullard and Ella (Ronnie) McKnight; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Herbert Lee Lewis. Sr. leaves behind a legacy of love, hard work, and kindness. He showed us that life isn't about what you collect, but about what you give. He gave us his time, his talents, his humor, and his heart. And though he is no longer here with us, those gifts remain—in the stories we'll keep telling, in the lessons he taught, and in the love he planted in our lives. We honor Herbert Lewis, Sr. today not just with our grief, but with our gratitude. For every role he played, for every life he touched, and for every example he leaves us to follow.
