Obituary A Time to be Born...Mrs. Edith Ricks was born in St. Charles, South Carolina on December 19, 1924 to the late Thomas (Tom) and Polly Wilson Carter. She was the oldest of six children and departed this life on Wednesday, November 20, 2019 at NHC Health Care of Sumter located at 1016 North Guignard Drive at 1:40 am.A Time to Grow...As all young children who grew up in and around Mt. Sinai Presbyterian Church, Edith attended the elementary school supported and headed by Reverend and Mrs. P.W. Toney. She continued her formal education at Mayesville Boarding School where she stayed with relatives during the week. To remain relevant as a nursing assistant, Edith participated in numerous continuing education courses offered by Montgomery General Hospital. She received a twenty-five years of service award from KGNC and finally retired from MGH Community Health Center 2008 at the age of 83.A Time to Worship...Edith loved the Lord and enjoyed hearing the preached word. She was a member of Mt. Sinai Presbyterian Church where she learned about the Lord through the teaching of Reverend P. W. Toney. Edith often reminisced about crossing through the property of Dick Scott to attend services at the little church on the old road pastored by her Uncle Jimmy Howard.A Time to Love...Edith met the love of her life, Lawson Ricks, Sr. at the age of seventeen at one of few social outing in the Goodwill community. They courted a short time & were joined in holy matrimony on July 5, 1941, before he was drafted into the US Navy on April 4, 1944. To this union one son was born, Lawson Ricks, Jr., whom Edith loved dearly. She demonstrated her enormous love for her son by providing unrelenting care for him in his youth as a single parent and in later years as his health failed.A Time to Die...The hour glass with its sands of time slowly but surely spilled its contents with the passing of the last grain of her life on Wednesday, November 20, 2019 at NHC Health Care Sumter. Through all the pain and suffering, both emotionally and physically, she did not complain, but prayed that God would soothe or eliminate her pains. She fought the good fight until God gave her rest.
