Dorothy Evans Slater was born January 22, 1940, in Sumter, South Carolina to the late Ida Mae Evans-Jones. Dorothy was educated in the public schools of Sumter County and upon completion of school moved to Baltimore, Maryland. In 1977, she joined New Saint Mark Baptist Church, 3905 Springdale Avenue, Baltimore, Maryland, where she was a choir member and on the usher board. Dorothy's first love was working for the Lord. After retiring, Mrs. Slater returned to Sumter and joined Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Golden Age Ministry. Dorothy was a strong-willed and caring person, a loving mother and great friend to all whom she knew. In addition to her mother, Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, James L. Slater. Dorothy departed this life to a brighter one with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Saturday, November 4, 2023, at Prisma Health Tuomey Medical Center, Sumter, South Carolina. Dorothy leaves to cherish those who shared her life and joy with, one daughter, Jonell J. (Willie) Wells; stepdaughter, Pamela Slater; two grandsons, Rashawn O'Shea and Brandon Javon; sister, Naomi Hardaway; two nieces, Sharon Hardaway and Donna H. (Everett) Henicks; five nephews, Michael (Denise) Evans, Herbert Evans, Rowland Evans, Andrew Evans and Edward Johnson; long time friend and adopted sister, Earline M. Denamus; special friends and members the Golden Age Ministry of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, Elizabeth Burns, Mary Jeff, Johnny May and Rose Scott; and a host of cousins, other relatives and friends.
