Obituary

Dora Scarborough Parrott, affectionately known as "Rutha Mae" was born to the late Albert Colclough and Maggie Scarborough Copeland on February 9, 1940, in Lee County, South Carolina. Dora at an early age joined New Zion AME Church in Wysacky. She was educated in the public schools of Lee County, South Carolina and later in life returned back to school and received her GED from Sumter County Adult Education.  Dora was married to the late James Parrott, Sr. and to this union, they were blessed with six children. They were members of the Mt. Pleasant AME Church in Lynchburg, South Carolina. Obedient to the word and promises of God. She trusted Him to guide her as a wife, mother and grandmother as well in her daily walk of faith. For many years, she worked in the Tobacco Industry in Timmonsville, South Carolina. After leaving the tobacco industry, she gained employment with Lawyer Warner in Sumter, South Carolina. Prior to her retirement, she worked for Spann's Market in Wedgefield, South Carolina, where she met people from all walks of life, who enjoyed her home cooking, especially her sweet potato pies and sweet potato bread. Spann's just wasn't the same after she retired. She enjoyed fishing, playing spades, beating everyone at checkers, however she mostly enjoyed reading her Bible. Respected in the church, her workplace, and in her community. The children of the neighborhood especially adore her and loved her cooking as well. She would turn no one away from her door and she would always make people feel at home. Applauding her children and grandchildren for their accomplishments, as she always encouraged and pushed us to higher heights. She was the epitome of a woman as she overcame many trails and tribulations. So, not only did she encourage us, but she showed us that with faith in God, we could do anything. Dora was preceded in death by her husband, James Parrott, Sr.; her parents, Maggie Scarborough Copeland and Albert Colclough; one son, Darrell L. Parrott; one daughter, Linda McBride Geter; one sister, Ann Gary; three brothers, John Scarborough, David Hudson and Abraham McDuffie. Dora was called to eternal rest on Sunday, March 10, 2024, in Sumter, South Carolina. Dora memories will be deeply cherished by her loving children, Marth Parrott of Dalzell, SC, James (Mary) Parrott of Dalzell, SC, Carolyn (Reverend Earnest) Brown of Sumter, SC, Jeanette Milliner of Dalzell, SC, Larry (Rebecca) Parrott, Sumter, SC and Denise (Marvin) Wilson of Sumter, SC; thirteen (13) grandchildren; eleven (11) great grandchildren; three sisters, Lucille Colclough, Laura Colclough, and Mary Colclough of Newark, NJ; one brother, Walter (Precious) Colclough of Atlanta, GA; five sisters-in-law, Everlina Parrott of Wysacky, SC, Ethel Isaac (Thompson) of Lynchburg, SC, Dorothy Jackson of Mayesville, SC, Naomi (Curtis) Dixon of Mayesville, SC, Lula Hudson of Mayesville, SC and Marie Scarborough of Sumter, SC; two brothers-in-law, John Parrott of Sumter, SC and Alfred Parrott of Columbia, SC; the telephone gang that she loved talking with on the telephone, Minnie Scarborough, Mary Howard, Margaret Milliner, Everlina Parrott, Dorothy Jackson and her daughter, Martha Parrott; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
