He was the fifth child of Frank and Camilla Houser Palmer residing in the Kitfield Community. He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Pinopolis, SC, where he accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior under Pastor Steward. Donald was educated in the public schools of Berkeley County (Berkeley County High School) of Moncks Corner, SC. One of his most significant accomplishments in school was having his poetry piece featured in the local newspaper and displayed at the Charleston Museum. Upon completing high school, Donald was employed as a welder, a carnie (travel carnival employee), and later worked with Uniroyal Tire Company. In 1973, he enlisted in the United States Army where he received a National Defense Service Medal. After being honorably discharged from the military, he took some time to explore the world and eventually ended up in Columbia, SC. He began working with South Carolina Department of Mental Health as a plumber. Later, he received certification from Sumter Technical College and earned the title of Master Plumber. He taught the trade of plumbing to anyone willing to learn. In addition to working as a plumber, he also labored in construction. After retiring from the Department of Mental Health, he became affiliated with the Duck Bottom Hunting Club in Horatio, SC. While working in construction, Donald met Dora Miller the love of his life. It was love at first sight! Within months, they were married on November 23, 1985. With Dora in his life, Donald became a better man, husband, and father because he found a new purpose in life. Donald later developed a strong foundation on which he built his family. Donald and Dora Palmer reared three sons and two daughters in which they loved dearly. Le’Shunn (Bernetta) White of Columbia, SC, Karlos (Shelvona) Sears of Gastonia, NC, Donald Palmer II of Columbia, SC, Makesia Sumpter of Blythewood, SC, and Matina Pridgeon of Atlanta, GA. Becoming a grandad was one of Donald’s proudest moments. He cherished and enjoyed spending time with his 22 grandchildren. After making Horatio his home, Donald later joined Willow Grove African Methodist Episcopal Church. He served the church faithfully in various capacities as Trustee Pro Tem and a member of the Usher Board. He also served on the Men’s Choir, the Gospel Choir, the Sanctuary Choir, and was a passionate Sunday school teacher. He likewise served as the Chair of the Old Willow Grove Cemetery. Donald wanted to expand and do more in his community, so he became a Mason at Catchall Lodge 425. He always strived for personal greatness and had an enormous impact on the community. During his journey, he accumulated great brotherly relationships within the Masons and was well respected. Donald also made it his job to welcome everyone that moved into the neighborhood. Because of his welcoming attitude, he created lasting friendships that would carry on until this day. During Donald’s spare time, he loved fishing, gardening, and playing baseball. While playing baseball, he earned the nickname “Vacuum,” which means nothing ever got past him. In addition to his hobbies, he had a passion for cars and lending a helping hand when needed. On various occasions, Donald was a willing volunteer for the church, the community center and served on the Mayfest Planning Committee. In addition he volunteered at the Martin Luther King Community Center in Columbia, serving as a cook for many significant events. He provided a lot services at no charge in and outside the community. Donald transitioned from labor to reward on June 4, 2021 surrounded by his loving wife Dora, who remained by his bedside; his children, Le’Shunn, Makesia, and Donald II; his brother, Zebedee and brother-in-laws David and Michael; his sister-in law, Christine; his grandson Karlos Jr; his granddaughter Jasmaine; and granddaughter Keshaun who helped aided and provided around the clock care during his remaining days. His memory will be cherished by his five children, many grandchildren: Da’Shunnda, Jasmaine, Ke’Shaun, Mari, India, Le’Shunn Jr, Kamari, Shanye, Karlos Jr, Karlesse, Russ, Jordan, Josh, Sabreya, Nicholas, Donald Jr, Sydney, Karson and Dominic; Three Godchildren: Tevia Miller, Travis Hamilton, and Jer’Asia Alston; Two brothers: Rodger (Elaine) Palmer of Moncks Corner, SC, Zebedee (Shirley) Palmer of Columbia, SC; Three sisters: Lavinia P. Smalls of Moncks Corner, SC, Mary L. Palmer of Moncks Corner, SC, Brenda P.(James) Singleton of Columbia, SC; Three brothers-in-law: Tommy (Susie) Miller, Charles D.(Christine) Miller, Michael. L (Dr. Shirrie) Miller of Horatio, SC; Two sisters-in-law: Alice Hamilton of Columbia, SC and Wilhemenia E. Miller of Horatio, SC. In addition to his parents, Frank and Camilla Houser Palmer, Donald was preceded in death by his sister, Virginia Palmer and Godson, Lakwantrel Williams.
