Obituary

Azalee Wells Hampton, the fourth daughter of the late Henry and Rebecca (Parrott) Wells of Lynchburg, South Carolina, was born on March 7, 1949, in Sumter County, South Carolina. Azalee grew up as a member of Mount Pleasant AME Church, and as an adult a member of Goodwill Presbyterian Church USA. She often talked about going to church on Sundays with her dad as a child. She was a believer of Jesus Christ.  Azalee was a 1968 graduate of Eastern High School. She worked at Charm House Inc., Madison Industries, and as an in-home health care worker before retiring in 2021.  For the past 53 years, she was married to Nathaniel Hampton, Jr.  She was a very proud mother and grandmother who always took the time to be an ear for any problem that we had.  She lived an active life. She enjoyed quilting, playing with her grandchildren, baking sweet potato pies, dancing around the house, and talking to her sister many times each day. Azalee was always on the move. From dropping by to check on Minnie and Randy, running down to Myrtle Beach to check on Nik and the babies, to going to Belk in Camden with Betty; she was constantly on the go!  In December of 2022, her world came to a screeching halt. Our little Energizer Bunny began to slow down, but she never gave up hope. She began the strenuous task of undergoing chemotherapy for the next year. On January 12, 2024, the doctors placed her in hospice. She fought until she could fight no more, and eventually, she succumbed to her battle.  In addition to her parents, Azalee was preceded in death by one brother, Henry, Jr., and one sister, Ruby Wells. Azalee (Wells) Hampton passed away around midnight on Thursday, January 18, 2024, after a yearlong battle with pancreatic cancer. Up until her last days, she was still as feisty as ever. She loved her family and valued her relationships with her friends. Azalee was straight to the point but would do anything to help a person in need.  Azalee leaves behind to cherish her memories, her husband, Nathaniel Hampton, Jr. of Sumter, SC; daughters, Tonya Hampton of Hillcrest Heights, MD and Keesha (Herbert) Johnson of Columbia, SC; stepson, Dwayne (Tonya) Nelson of Sumter, SC; grandchildren, Bradley, Donovan, Maleeya, McKenzie, Tyler, and Mariah; great-grandchildren, Marlie and Kamryn, whom they affectionately called her "GiGi"; brother, Isaac (Mary) Wells of Jacksonville, FL; sisters, Minnie (Levan) McElveen of Lynchburg, SC, Ruth (Bobby) Jones of Jacksonville, Florida; Ivory Davis of Lynchburg, SC, and Betty Wells of Dalzell, SC; brothers-in-law, Harold (Margaret) Hampton, Carnell (Carrie) Hampton;  sisters-in-law, Vera (Ricky) Gardner, Ellaree Hampton, and Loretta Hampton; special friends, Nancy Colclough and Azalee Harry; along with a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends who she also adored.  Azalee was loved by many and will be greatly missed by all whose life she touched.
