Alphonse "Sarge" Young was born November 24, 1930, in Buffalo, New York to the late Luther James and Rachel Adams Young. Alphonse "Sarge" was the eldest of nine children and grew up as a local newspaper delivery boy. "Sarge" later entered the United States Air Force, where he completed his high school education and worked as a auto mechanic. "Sarge" served in the Korean and Vietnam Wars and honorably retired after twenty (20) years of service to the United States Air Force. "Sarge" has a strong work ethic. After retirement, "Sarge" continued his work as a mechanic, as well as working for the City of Sumter. He was an active life member of the local Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW). "Sarge" was a loving, caring, devoted, hard working man with a notable sense of humor. He enjoyed gardening, watching wrestling, dancing, and long conversations sharing childhood and military memories. "Sarge" was married to the late Peggy Wallace Young. In addition to his wife and parents, "Sarge" was preceded in death by a daughter, Georgia Ransom; grandson, Alphonza "Luther" Young; granddaughter, Billie "Peaches" Van Buren; and eight siblings, John Young, Frederick Young, Joanne Thorton, Madeline Revere Garrett, Alvin Revere, Daniel Revere, Rowena Revere Ginlack and Linston Young. On Tuesday, November 11, 2025, Alphonse "Sarge" Young peacefully gained his wings and entered heaven. Alphonse "Sarge" leaves to cherish his memories, a daughter, Sharon Wallace; four sons, David Young, James Wallace, Benny (Lurnethia) Wallace and Alphonso Wallace; special granddaughter reared in the home, Shakeena (Jeremiah G.) Wallace; grandchildren, Harold (Cindy) Ransom, Michael (Lakeasha) Ransome, Fredrian Robinson, India Wallace, Darnell Wallace, Alphonse McDaniel, Benny Wallace, Jr., Mario McDaniel, Jasmine Ransom, Malik (Markeeta) Ransom, Michael (Jamaya) Ransome, Jr., Jycora Cooper, Marlik Ransome, Marquise Ransom, Sergeant Dajan (Courtney) VanBuren, Dajanay VanBuren, Shanekwa (Robert) Dalton, Ayonna Young, Kristopher Young-Gregg, Amar'e Davis, Carson Ransom and Asantea Wallace, Jr.; special niece, Rachel McCoy; special nephew, Daniel Revere; and a host of other relatives and dear friends.
