Obituary Betty Ann Mitchell, age 71, of Hephzibah, GA, passed away peacefully on August 24, 2020. Legacy Born in Saluda, SC to Francis Mitchell and the late Frankie Perry, Sr. on December 16, 1948, Betty was a true matriarch who was kind and caring to everyone she knew. Betty dedicated her life to helping the lives of others. She found her spiritual home at Chinquapin Baptist Church. Betty graduated from Harlem Hospital School of Nursing, which made groundbreaking history for training African-American nurses. She had a wonderful nursing career that spanned 50 years. Patient-focused and compassionate, she served many years as Head Registered Nurse at Richmond County Health Department, Gracewood Hospital and Augusta State Medical Prison, where she was affectionately known as “Gangster Granny”. If you wanted to know the real deal about anything, she didn’t pull any punches. She was known as a strong woman, a hard worker who persevered through any challenge. In her early years, she started a group where she mentored other women in becoming a success and continued to do so throughout her life. Betty was also a trailblazer in business, and her entrepreneurial spirit was inspiring. Starting her own business specializing in prenatal care, she was the best at everything she set out to do. After retirement, her business savvy didn’t stop there. Finding a need in her community, Betty started a health supplement store inspired by her own love for health awareness. When Betty wasn’t working, she enjoyed cooking, gardening, church, shopping, and loving on her children and grandchildren with knowledge and understanding. She was an amazing cook. Betty was the person who always had a wise answer to life’s questions, and her comforting presence was felt by all. Betty will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her, and her infinite strength, tough love, wise words, ways, and actions will stay with us forever. Family Beloved mother of Rickie, Sadiqa, and the late Raheem, mother-in-law to Vonetta, cherished grandmother to 12 grandchildren, and 2 Great-Grandchildren. Betty also left behind her mother, Mama Francis, 3 sisters and 3 brothers, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
