Vermell Jackson-Harvin

Obituary Vermell Jackson Harvin, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 1, 2020 at the Fort Washington Health & Rehab Center in Fort Washington, MD. She was the first child of three born to the late Horace Jackson and Emma C. Pringle- Jackson on September 27, 1934 in Sumter, South Carolina. Vermell was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses on March 11, 1972 and served as a faithful witness for the past 48 years. For many years, she has been a member of the Sumter South Congregation. She remained active until her illness made it impossible for her to function effectively. She attended Stone Hill Elementary School grades 1-7 in Sumter. She received her High School Diploma from Lincoln High School in 1955 also in Sumter, SC. She was employed by Sumter Laundry Cleaners for a number of years and later was employed by Broad Street Cleaners in Sumter. Vermell when growing up as a child she enjoyed playing with three of her favorite cousins (Theola, Herbert and Hermene) and getting her hair done by their mother. She loved to play school teacher and playing was turned into a learning experience (she used the columns on the porch to learn her time tables). She developed a kind and caring demeanor for people and would do anything she could to help you. As an adult, she loved to dress neat and have her hair looking good at all times. She developed a passion for cooking and having things neat and clean. She loved to prepare a hot noon lunch for her husband and his cousin Robert. She loved to have a refreshing glass of ice tea when her friends would stop by on a scorching hot day. On May 27, 1958, Vermell was joined in marriage to the late James Thomas Harvin – “the love of her life.” Out of this union came two children, William and Patricia. Her children were her most special possession! In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Thomas Harvin, three sisters-in-laws, Rachel Harvin Jackson of Philadelphia, PA; Anne Harvin-Rich of Sumter, SC and Cynthia Mack-Harvin of Sumter, SC, three brothers-in-laws, John Melvin, Jimmie Lee Harvin and Ernest Jackson. Vermell leaves to mourn: one son William Harvin, of Clinton, MD; Patricia Harvin-Lomax of Suitland, MD; two grandchildren; Daryl (Lizzette) Lomax, Jr., of Clinton, MD; Jerel (Melissa) Lomax of Capital Heights, MD; four great grandchildren; Jerel Lomax, Jr., Luna Lomax, Marley Lomax and Daryl Lomax III; one sister Mary (William) Allen of Suitland, MD; one brother Horace Jackson, Jr. of Forestville, MD; four brothers-in-laws Willie (Janice) Harvin of Darlington, SC; Pressley (Melody) Harvin of Sumter, SC; Calvin Harvin of Sumter, SC; Norris (Marie) Harvin of Sumter, SC; two sisters-in-laws: Mamie (Stanley) Johnson of Houston, TX, and Virginia (Ricky) Williams of Charlotte, NC; Robert C. Pringle a special cousin who took care of her while growing up; Sandra Lovelace a special daughter like friend; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
